I have had psoriatic arthritis for many years and have had everything known to mankind, including methotrexate and embrel. These are very dangerous drugs and just about killed me. I have been on pain meds and occasionally use them. Until you have lived with this you don't know how bad it is. I have a wheel chair, walker, and cane that I use when necessary. Okay I will admit I didn't have psoriasis or as much pain when on some of these meds, but my hair fell out and I was hospitalized more than not during that time, due to bilateral pneumonia and infection after infection (obviousely when you deminish the immune system you are more prone to illness.
I have talked with my doctors about trying the stuff Paul Harvey talks about. My docs tell me that they have seen good results with rheumatoid arthritis, but that psoriatic arthritis is a bird of a different fellow. They do however thing it is worth trying. I belive it is called, "glucosamene" or something like it.
I realize this is an auto-immune disease and it will take time to find all the answers, but I have faith we will see that day. You also might try getting involved with "Psoriasis Connection", you can find them on the net. I also promote good diet, as well as natural vitamins, herbs, and minerals. I believe we are all difficient.

my husband takes Embrel, it's a medication that stops the auto-immune response.-- are you seeing a rheumatologist or just a plain family doctor for this?
You should ask your doctor to try that, as well as some anti- inflammatory meds.
The morphine & dilaudid are going to turn you into a prescription addict before you know it & will block your brain's abiility to even know you are taking pain meds.
You should also ask to be sent to biofeedback or some other pain management professional.
good luck.

Dilaudid and morphine for arthritis? Something is not Kosher here. Stop the narcotics. Only anti inflammatory agents are indicated. You may have an addict.

the morphine just blocks the pain for you at the same time destroys you, i have gone from vicatin, duragesic patch and such to good therapy and meditation, i know its not easy but you have to realize that it is chronic and do something pro active to maintain you body, Good ways are stretching, hot tub for awhile, eat good veggies and take your vitamins, do some kind of exercise everyday and live a full life. good luck

Not too long ago I had a client with psoriatic arthritis, and she was on a high dose of an NSAID which did a really good job of covering up the problem. I knew the condition was stemming from an allergy, so over a few months we cleaned up her diet, reduced her stress levels, and had her taking several helpful supplements. She now no longer needs the medications (ie. she has much less pain) and her psoriasis has cleared up drastically.

First, I told her to start taking 1 gm of MSM daily, as well as shark cartilage, boswelia for morning pain and stiffness, and tumeric for inflammation. This was the preliminary protocol to address the painful symptoms, but MSM needed to be continued for a minimum of 6 months. Then she began taking 1-2 gm of buffered vitamin C with bioflavonoids daily to also reduce inflammation as well as histamine levels. Additionally, it was vital for her to take a therapeutic (high) dose of Omega-3 (particularly EPA) oil in the form of herring oil (1600 mg of EPA per tsp.) to help lubricate the joints, support the immune system, and reduce inflammation further. And lastly, my client began taking a B-complex (50 mg) supplement (with a meal, daily) to help her cope with the physiological effects of stress.

More importantly though, the changes in her diet brought about the most prompt and quantitative results. She was taken off ALL allergenic foods. These are: citrus fruits, soy, wheat and other gluten-containing grains, dairy, meat (except turkey), fish (except halibut, swordfish, and sole), tomatoes and other members of the nightshade family (these are highly indicated in arthritis also), eggs and corn. She did well in terms of her diet, but she was reluctant to stop eating chicken. However, just a few days after elimating chicken from her diet, she woke up one morning and had no need for her pain medication! We identified chicken as the primary offender.

Lastly, we addressed a possible condition called candidiasis, and she began a course of probiotics.

Psoriatic arthritis is a serious condition not to be taken lightly. Doctors warn that there is no cure and can lead to the patient becoming wheelchair-bound. They usually offer high doses of NSAIDS which destroy the digestive tract over time. Please visit your naturopath for the alternative solution that's right for you.

Take care,
Tabitha.

Try one or two tablespoons a day of flax seed oil. Take internally. I have psoriasis and it's the only thing that helps. I have heard that ridding your digestive system of candida can help too. I have heard of a product called Emu oil that can be applied topically. There is a product available at most pharmacies called Blue something that contains Emu oil and other aromatic remedies. My mother says that it really works... I just don't know the name of it.

Psoriatic arthritis can be both painful and destructive to small joints. Depending on circumstances both sulphasalazine and cytotoxic drugs can be used. These are both considered specialist rather than GP therapies. If he has ongoing problems he needs referral to a Rheumatologist to consider these options.
